Arrow Electronics accelerates leadership in IoT with latest acquisition

Arrow Electronics, Inc. is continuing its push into the Internet of Things (IoT) space with its newly signed acquisition agreement.

The Colorado-based electronic components and computer products distributor has announced that it will be acquiring eInfochips, a design and managed services company. eInfochips works with Fortune 1000 companies to help them deploy technology, develop custom hardware and software, and transition to new IoT-based business models.

Thanks to this acquisition, the company will expand Arrow’s IoT “sensor-to-sunset” platform by adding engineering, solution architecture, embedded software development, security, mobile device connectivity, app development, cloud configuration and management, and managed services like big data analytics, according to a Jan. 2 press release.

“Upon close of this acquisition, eInfochips advances our IoT strategy, expands our offerings, and moves us into the rapidly growing IoT services market. As a result, we will deliver complex and connected IoT solutions and technologies across multiple cloud platforms,” Michael J. Long, chairman, president, and CEO of Arrow, says in the release. “This acquisition adds over 1,500 IoT solution architects, engineers, and software development resources to Arrow’s already leading position in IoT design services.”

eInfochips has 1,500 employees globally and is headquartered in San Jose, Calif., with other locations in India and Europe. Not only does the company deliver digital transformation products and services like IoT solutions across industries ranging from retail and consumer to industrial automation, healthcare, and aerospace, it also boasts chip design abilities.

Matt Anderson, chief digital officer at Arrow, continues this thought, saying that by adding eInfochips’ IoT capabilities and engineers to its eDesign digital platform, a collaboration tool that connects engineers with customers to help with solution designs, “will substantially augment the scale of eInfochips’ services, delivered via digital tools, to Arrow’s 125,000 customers.”

The deal is expected to close before the end of the month, however, no financial information has been released as of publication.

While this is Arrow’s first IoT push of 2018, it spent much of 2017 building up its expertise in the space with other moves. In July, it signed a global distribution agreement with Bosch Sensortec to supply MEMS (microelectromechanical systems) sensors for its IoT devices. It also partnered with Vimoc Technologies, an artificial intelligence solutions company, in May to better optimize its IoT solutions.
