Matthew Nickasch comments on the current economic state of the industry as it relates to Nortel’s recent decision to cut jobs.

“Companies such as Nortel can most likely weather one major change: in the economy, or in market share, but with two severely changing variables, it becomes very difficult. This is not likely the only news we’ll be hearing from Nortel, or other ‘big telecom’ vendors in the upcoming weeks and months. Simply put, it’s a ‘wait and see’ moment in where Nortel’s strengths lie.”

IDC slashes 2009 global IT projections

Timothy Morgan includes IDC market researchers’ revised forecasts for global IT spending in the coming year.

“The market researchers at IDC this morning put out revised projections for global IT spending in 2009, and they now say that global IT spending in 2009 will grow at only 2.6 per cent. That’s down from an earlier projection of 5.9 per cent growth in year-over-year spending, a projection that came out in August, when the economies of the world were jittery and skittish, not heading towards recession.”

First laptops “designed by” Best Buy look like winners

John Morris writes about new laptops from HP and Toshiba which are now being sold exclusively at Best Buy.

“The Pavilion dv3510nr is one of two Blue Label notebooks–the other is the Toshiba Satellite e105-s140–which are not only sold exclusively at Best Buy, but were also designed based on feedback from the retailer’s customers. According to Best Buy customers are looking for a decent-size display in a thin and lightweight laptop, a backlit keyboard and a standard two-year warranty.”
