Check Point buys Nokia security appliance business

John Leyden provides details about Check Point Software’s recent decision to buy Nokia’s security appliance business.

“Terms of the deal, announced (last) Monday, remain undisclosed. The agreement is subject to regulatory approval but expected to close in the first quarter of 2009. For Nokia, the deal represents a chance to concentrate on its core businesses in developing mobile handsets and telecoms kit for carriers. More than 220,000 Nokia appliances have been bought by 23,000 customers worldwide. Check Point has promised to support these customers.”

Intel buys a little more Imagination, says it might want it all

Nilay Patel writes about Intel’s increased investment in developer, Imagination Technologies.

“Intel’s upped its own investment in (Imagination Technologies) to 3.04 per cent. That’s not quite as much as Apple’s 3.6 per cent stake, but Intel seems ready to commit — it also filed a statement with the London Stock Exchange saying it might try and acquire all of Imagination if it thinks another company is on the prowl.”
