How IT job titles and roles are changing in accordance with business size

Dissecting recent changes in the IT job market

Jason W. Eckert writes of two trends becoming commonplace in IT departments today, an increase in number of generalized IT jobs in the SMB space and more specific focused IT jobs. Here he offers advice to everyone working in these areas.

“I think someone who is relatively new to IT should start in the generalized market space and move to a business-focused specialized job after spending many years in IT. This fits well with the job market since there are far more smaller organizations and better hiring prospects in the generalized market space. As experience builds in a specialized area, job candidates are better prepared to apply for those specialized jobs in larger organizations.”

“Apparently the type of identity fraud that’s on the rise is taking social security numbers from kids. It’s still a small part of the total identity fraud problem, and it’s not so much an online phenomenon as most cases involve family members, but it’s much more problematic, as it’s often not identified until many years later when the kid actually applies for a credit card.”
