HP’s latest gaming PCs are VR-ready

HP Inc. is rolling out a new line of high-end gaming desktops and laptops that will allow customers to take advantage of the virtual reality gaming appliances that many gamers are eagerly awaiting.

HP’s new OMEN X product line aims to provide immersive experiences to PC gamers, whether they’re using it for traditional or VR games. The lineup includes a desktop, a laptop, a new curved display and accompanying peripherals.

The OMEN X Desktop offers up to dual NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1080 and AMD Radeon R9 Fury X graphics cards, 6th Generation Intel Core i5/i7 processors with overlocking capabilities and a VR-ready GPU. According to HP’s announcement, the desktop was designed for the most demanding VR and AAA games. The gaming rig is available now direct from HP’s website, but the vendor plans to roll it out to partners on October 16. It will carry a US$2,099.99 price tag.

“The OMEN X Desktop was built for serious gamers who need fierce performance out-of-the-box in a fully customizable chassis — something not typically available from traditional PC manufacturers,” said Kevin Frost, HP’s vice president and general manager of consumer personal systems, in a statement. “HP’s engineers combined a unique design that maximizes thermal management with support for industry standard components so that the true enthusiast can always be up to date with the latest hardware to maintain peak performance with a customized rig.”

The OMEN 17 Laptop carries a US$1,599 price tag and features NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1060 and 1070 graphics cards, a mini display port for 2K and 4K output and streaming and a 95W polymer battery for up to 7.5 hours of run time. As with the OMEN X Desktop, the OMEN 17 Laptop was designed to be VR-ready.

In addition to the new gaming computers, HP also unveiled the OMEN X by HP Curved Display, which will begin shipping in early 2017, and new peripherals under the SteelSeries Accessories banner. The peripherals, which include the OMEN Headset (US$79.99), OMEN Keyboard (US$99.99), OMEN Mouse (US$59.99) and OMEN Mouse Pad (US$19.99) will be available in mid-September through HP.com and partners.
