HTC’s surprise announcement is now available in Canada

After teasing that it will be making an ‘unexpected surprise’ announcement yesterday, HTC has announced that its HTC U Ultra smartphone will be coming to Canada, and it’s available immediately.

The phone, which was announced earlier this year, is available on the HTC website as an unlocked device for $999. It is available in three colors: Sapphire Blue, Ice White, and Brilliant Black.

The ‘sapphire blue’ and 128 GB storage device is a limited edition variant of the U Ultra. Sapphire screens, which are supposedly naturally strong, scratch resistant, can withstand flexing, and transmit light extremely well, are still fairly rare, especially since Corning Inc., the manufacturing company behind Gorilla Glass, claims that it isn’t as viable as it stands. Users will have to decide if the rarity and prestige of the sapphire glass is enough for justify the thousand dollar cost.

As of now it is still unclear whether or not the HTC U Ultra is the next flagship HTC device, as the company has been mum on the existence of the HTC 11.

Additionally, those who purchase the HTC U Ultra can also grab a pair of JBL Aware C earphones for $135. Those are normally priced at $270, and the headphones connect through the phone’s USB Type-C port – a useful feature considering it lacks the traditional 3.5mm audio jack.
