Microsoft and Nokia to make significant announcement soon

No details have been released but the speculation is that Microsoft and Nokia will make a significant announced on Windows Phone 8 on Sept. 5.

CDN has learned from a source that Microsoft will hold a press conference along with its top smartphone alliance partner Nokia. The name of the city hosting the press conference and the topic of that event are still not known.

However, CNet is reporting that it will be held in New York City at the same time as Nokia World in Helsinki, Finland.

Nokia in early 2011 forged a strategic alliance with Microsoft where the mobile phone maker would dump its Symbian operating system in favour of Windows Phone 7. Later on in 2011 Nokia unveiled the first Windows Phone smartphone called Lumia. It would not be a stretch to think the Sept. 5 announcement might include the launch of new Lumia smartphones powered by Windows Phone 8.

Also consider that Nokia president and CEO Stephen Elop once held a leadership position at Microsoft reporting to company CEO Steve Ballmer.

CDN will continue to follow this story.

Nokia has reported poor second quarter results including a 34 per cent slump in smartphone sales.

The struggling Finnish firm announced a net sales loss of 1.7bn, a 19 per cent drop compared with the same quarter of last year. The glimmer of joy for Nokia was a small two per cent increase in mobile phone shipments to 73.5 million.

Elop said this about the slumping sales: “Nokia is taking action to manage through this transition period. While Q2 was a difficult quarter, Nokia employees are demonstrating their determination to strengthen our competitiveness, improve our operating model and carefully manage our financial resources.”
