Novell: Desktop Linux paves way to Lenovo server deal

“Novell is losing money in the desktop Linux market, but those desktop deals are driving big wins in the server arena, according to senior vice-president and CMO John Dragoon. Case in point: Novell’s desktop Linux relationship with Lenovo – the big PC maker – will extend to servers this September, confirms Dragoon. That’s good news for Novell’s server business. But can Novell turn a profit with desktop Linux?”

“Cheap mini notebook computers like the Asus Eee – will make up a third of all notebook sales in the future, and the majority of sales in developing nations. Michael Dell pitched his company’s NetBook product line as something telcos could offer to customers for free, subsidizing the hardware with monthly subscription fees.”

“Wal-Mart and HP have apparently decided to try ditching most of the packaging altogether, and letting you walk out with your new laptop in a messenger bag, rather than a box. Yes, there are still boxes from when the machines are shipped from HP to Wal-Mart, but the company can now fit 3 laptops to a box, significantly reducing packaging and making life easier on customers in the long run.”
