OpenText acquires PaaS vendor

OpenText Corp. continues to expand its cloud-based solutions through acquisitions.

The Waterloo, Ont.-based company said Friday it has bought Netherlands-based Cordys B.V., a privately-held maker of business process management software and clouds solutions, for US$33 million.

Although based in Europe, Cordys has some North American customers, including British Columbia’s Pacific Blue Cross. Others are India’s Tata Motors, Germany’s Siemens Healthcare, France’s Schneider Electric and Japan’s Fujitsu Ltd.

System integrator partners include Accenture and Cap Gemini.

The Cordys platform will now be called OpenText Cordys. OpenText said the Cordys acquisition will be combined with technologies gain from its July purchase of ICCM Solutions to extend its BPM and case management offerings to demanding enterprises.

In May OpenText bought EasyLink Services, a provider of cloud-based electronic messaging and business integration services.

“The acquisition of Cordys will enable OpenText to offer the strongest process and case management platform in the business, OpenText CEO Mark Barrenechea (pictured above) said in a statement. “It means that we are now able to offer the broadest set of BPM technologies, including a 100 per cent native cloud-based BPM platform and PaaS (platform as a service) solution, cloud orchestration, integration ESB (enterprise service bus, rules engine, business activity monitoring, social and mobile interfaces, and an application development environment all from a single vendor and single platform.”

The company said acquisition will also allow it to more aggressively get its products used by independent software vendors, system integrators and managed service providers, who it believes will find Cordys’ BPM features and SaaS (software as a service) and PaaS deployment options to be an attractive platform for creating process automation solutions for customers.

OpenText said the Cordys Business Operations Platform features a multi-tenant SOA-based architecture with cloud orchestration capabilities to give OpenText customers the ability to choose from on-premises, cloud, or hybrid deployment.

The Cordys platform also supports other BPM, enterprise content management and customer experience management products.
“We are very excited to be part of the OpenText family,” Cordys CEO Art Landro said in a statement.  “Our products will add exceptional value to their EIM (enterprise information management) suite of solutions, and will position OpenText as the leader in the cloud and PaaS marketplace. Together, we can provide customers and partners with a multi-tenant BPM and case management solution with cloud and hybrid deployment options, as well as support ISVs and MSPs looking to take solutions into their markets.
“The advanced BPM and PaaS technologies of Cordys, and the impressive resources, customer base, and global reach of OpenText make us the perfect team at the perfect time to take a leadership position in this expanding market.”

Entrepreneur Jan Baan, whose Baan Company was an early pioneer in enterprise resourse management software, co-founded Cordys in 2001 with Theodoor Van Donge.
