Software vendor helps MSPs and SMBs better manage their data

Nimsoft, an independent business unit under CA Technologies, is an IT management software vendor that enables mid-market customers to monitor and manage their data, infrastructure and services.

The company was founded as Nimbus Software in 1998 and later became known as Nimsoft a few years ago. In March of this year, CA acquired the company for US$350 million. Post-acquisition, Nimsoft still operates as its own unit, but it’s now under the CA Cloud Products and Solutions Business line. Gary Read, the president and CEO of the company, still leads the Nimsoft team.

The company’s unified monitoring solutions allow managed service providers to bring what the company calls “elastic IT offerings” to the market. Chris O’Connell, director of product management at Nimsoft, said in the past, IT was focused on standardizing business environments and “keeping everything static,” however with advancements in technology and the introduction of cloud computing, the amount of required IT resources now fluctuate in order to meet demand. This, he explains, is what elastic IT services are all about.

Nimsoft’s Monitoring Solution and its On Demand software offerings can be deployed as an on-premise solution or it can be deployed using a software-as-a-service (SaaS) model. The company currently has more than 1,000 mid-market sized business customers, O’Connell said.

In addition to working with service providers, O’Connell said the company also deals through distributor Ingram Micro’s Seismic managed services business. Channel partners can also white label and resell Nimsoft’s software solutions as their own, O’Connell said.

Todd Simpson, vice-president of operations for Oakville, Ont.-based systems integrator Unis Lumin, said his company focuses on three areas: maintain, monitor and managed services. Nimsoft brings value to Unis Lumin because it’s not only a company that embraces the MSP model, but its solutions are ideal for the SMB space, Simpson said.

“Nimsoft is our go-to-market platform now,” Simpson said. “We felt customers appreciate knowing what’s under the covers and Nimsoft has a powerful user interface for customers who are looking for a good user experience with things like unified service dashboards.”

With its pay-as-you-go capabilities, partners can help their customers start small by only having them pay for what they use and growing when required. On the other hand, if a customer reduces its size, they can also adjust their unified monitoring solution needs, O’Connell explained.

At Unis Lumin, Simpson said because it’s so “painless” to work with Nimsoft and its solutions, the company’s now capable of bringing on a new customer in about half the time that it took compared to in the past, therefore leading to more revenue opportunities.

Nimsoft’s Monitoring Solution and On Demand solution offerings allow customers to perform real-time usage metering activities using unified service dashboards. The solutions are also designed to automatically create and deliver real-time monitoring data and alerts for auditing and billing purposes.
