“HP’s software would be based on Linux, but it would be simpler and easier for mainstream users. The division’s CTO insists ‘it’s about innovating on top of Vista.’”

HP’s EDS acquisition to kill 24,600 jobs

Austin Modine describes HP’s “restructuring program” as a result of its $13.9 billion acquisition of EDS.

“HP…says some 24,600 employees will lose their jobs in a ‘restructuring program’ for the EDS business group to take place over the next three years. The tech giant said workforce reduction will vary by country, based on local legal requirements and talks with works councils and employee representatives. Nearly half will occur in the US. The total number of layoffs planed equals about 7.5 per cent of the combined companies’ workforce, according to HP.”

Rumour: Windows 7 to arrive early, first Beta due October 27

Scott Gilbertson explains a rumour that Microsoft’s Windows 7 could arrive earlier than expected.

“Although Microsoft has previously said that Windows 7 would not arrive until early 2010, new rumours surfaced Monday claiming that the company’s internal calendar puts the release date at June 3, 2009. The rumour also says that Microsoft will use its upcoming Professional Developers Conference in October to launch the first public beta of Windows 7.”
