Acer announces first Google Chrome OS netbook

Rachel King writes about Acer’s new Google Chrome OS-based netbook, which is reportedly due out for release in 2010.
“The netbook company has been working on the yet-to-be-named device since much earlier this year. They’ve also dallied around with Google before on the Acer Aspire D250, which has dual-boot Windows XP and Google Android capabilities. While we don’t have an exact date, or even sample specs or prices yet, it’s likely that this is only the first of an oncoming slew of Chrome OS-powered netbooks.”
Intel to intro next-gen netbook Atom on 10 January?

Tony Smith writes that there will be new netbooks “based on Intel’s next-generation ‘Pine Trail’ Atom chippage after 10 January – the day the products will be formally launched, it seems.”
“That date is slap-bang in the middle of the Consumer Electronics Show. CES, which kicks off in Las Vegas on January 7, has long expected to host Pine Trail’s introduction. The precise date is what Asian hardware manufacturers are saying, DigiTimes reports. Acer, Asus, Lenovo and MSI, to name but four, will all introduce Pine Trail-based netbooks on 11 January.”
Cisco retains security leadership in Q3

Cisco Subnet writes about the network security appliances and software market space.
“The worldwide market for network security appliances and software grew seven per cent between the second and third quarters to $1.26 billion, according to Infonetics Research. Cisco remains the leader with 35 per cent of the market. It gained a point of share from Q2, Infonetics found, Cisco’s first sequential gain in three quarters. Juniper overtook Check Point for No. 2 thanks to a 20 per cent increase in revenue. Cisco grew eight per cent in Q3.”
