Top 5 Solution providers to watch in 2010: Seccuris

Although this 11-year-old company’s roots are in Winnipeg, it has been steadily growing its market and geographic presence to also include other parts of the country.

Michael Legary, the founder of Seccuris, said the company is an information assurance solution provider. The company, he explains, offers a variety of services such as systems integration, managed security monitoring and infrastructure services, as well as training services.

“We help enable risk management in IT systems and environments for mid and large enterprises throughout Canada,” Legary said. “Our core customer target market is in Canada, but for some of our specific services, we also provide international support.”

Seccuris helps support and enable businesses by addressing their particular information security needs, Legary said. To date, the company has achieved customer successes in vertical markets which include healthcare, gaming, and government institutions. Legary said Seccuris is also evaluating other verticals such as the oil and gas industry, which is beginning to “mature” on the information security side of things.

The company was founded in 1999 and is headquartered in Winnipeg, with additional satellite capabilities in Regina, Sask., Calgary and Ottawa. There are currently 50 employees who work at Seccuris, Legary said.

Legary explains that “proper” information security is achieved through the “development, implementation, and maintenance of well-rounded information security architecture.” According to Seccuris, there are five components that make up a business’ information security architecture. They include, security organization and infrastructure, security policies, standards and procedures, security baselines and risk assessments, security awareness and training programs, and compliance.

When it comes to compliance in the mid-market, Legary says these businesses usually view any solution or technology investments as “risky.”It’s Seccuris’ job to help businesses achieve these standards by offering them things like awareness materials and education around security methods and related technologies, he added.

“The mid-market has a major interest to implement solution suites such as NAC (network access control) and DLP (data loss prevention), but they’re often apprehensive to make any purchasing decisions,” Legary said. “We as the business partner have to be able to communicate what the value is to the business and explain why companies should be making these investments.”

The company offers managed security monitoring services in areas which include, firewall, intrusion detection, intrusion prevention, unified threat management, and systems monitoring. On the managed security infrastructure services side, the company offers services including, vulnerability assessment, security information, security support services, and managed compliance services, to name a few.“The challenge we’ve had from a competition standpoint is that we compete against international service providers in these areas too,” Legary said, “But we bring the breadth of a world-class service company, that’s based in Canada. Being Canadian is our boutique-style specialization and we bring a value statement that’s cost-effective to end-users.”

In 2010, Legary says the company plans to increase its growth in areas around identity management and DLP services, in addition to focusing on further growing its business in the Eastern part of Canada.
