ViewSonic announces its first virtual desktop thin client

In partnership with Citrix Systems, display vendor ViewSonic is getting into the virtual desktop computing arena with a managed smart displays running Citrix XenMobile enterprise mobility management solution.

The XenMobile solution offers management and control of mobile devices, apps, and data. By integrating it with ViewSonic’s new smart displays, the Walnut, Calif.-based vendor plans to offer 24-inch and 22-inch models for managing both mobile and smart devices seamlessly.

Amit Pandey, vice president and general manager, Mobile Platforms group at Citrix, said XenMobile supports the broadest array of new types of devices in the industry such as ViewSonic’s SD-A245 and SD-A225 smart displays. In collaboration with ViewSonic, XenMobile will be pre-loaded on to smart displays allows IT staff and channel partners to remotely secure and deliver apps and data on these new classes of devices.

According to Viewsonic, by extending mobile solutions to smart displays running Android, organizations can standardize on apps and mobile management tools for both mobile and smart devices, reducing IT complexity and streamlining costs.

Jeff Volpe, president of ViewSonic Americas, said through the relationship with Citrix, ViewSonic is helping IT organizations effectively extend their enterprise mobility investment to smart devices connecting to virtual desktops. At the same time, the company’s display solutions allows users to access an extremely secure, locked down desktop that IT can easily manage. This new class of device changes the game in thin computing, delivering tomorrow’s thin client today.

In addition to the security and manageability features of the ViewSonic smart displays with XenMobile, the new combination has the ability to natively run managed mobile applications, including Worx-enabled Android mobile apps along with native multimedia such as video.

ViewSonic’s SD-A245 and SD-A225 smart displays with XenMobile will be available in August at respective ESPs of $549 and $449.
