Watch for a smartwatch from Samsung

Samsung Electronics and Apple are already doing battle in the smartphone arena, and their rivalry may soon spill over into a more nascent area: the smartwatch.

Apple’s smartwatch is just well-founded rumour at this point, but a Samsung executive told Bloomberg that its own smartwatch is very real real (as the leaked photos that have surfaced, such as above, would seem to indicate).

“We’ve been preparing the watch product for so long,” Lee Young Hee, executive vice-president of Samsung’s mobile business, told Bloomberg. “We are working very hard to get ready for it. We are preparing products for the future, and the watch is definitely one of them.”

No other details were forthcoming. With the smartphone market saturation though, vendors are searching for the next big thing and the smartwatch may well be it. A number of startups have launched smartwatch offerings through crowdfunding, generating record-setting investment, and the established vendors are beginning to take notice.
