Cisco layoffs commenced today, sources say

Cisco Subnet writes about the Cisco layoffs which according to Channelweb.com, began yesterday.
“The story (on Channelweb.com) quotes unnamed sources and does not have total figures for the number of jobs eliminated, however puts the San Jose number at about 250. The story says that cuts today were made worldwide, but were fewer than the 1,500- 2,000 lay-offs expected. The company has pledged to slice $1 billion out of its operating budget in its fiscal 2009 and, in a second-quarter earnings call said that up to 2,000 job could go.”
Nortel to cut 3,200 workers

Austin Modine reports on the latest Nortel Networks layoffs.
“Nortel Networks plans to lay off 3,200 workers worldwide, about a tenth of the total workforce. The latest round of reductions follow 1,800 job cuts the company announced in December. The Toronto-based telecom equipment maker, which filed for bankruptcy protection last month, said Wednesday it will also drop employee bonuses for 2008 and end stock-based compensation. Nortel expects the layoffs to be made over the next several months.”
Nokia may enter laptop industry, CEO says

Andrew Nusca writes that according to Nokia’s CEO, the company is considering entering the notebook market.
“Nokia, the world’s leading mobile phone manufactuer, is considering entering the laptop business, CEO Olli-Pekka Kallasvuo said in an interview to Finnish national broadcaster YLE Wednesday. ‘We are looking very actively also at this opportunity,’ Kallasvuo said, when asked whether Nokia plans to make laptops.”
