Todd Bishop is getting ready for the annual Microsoft hardware show in Los Angeles.

“I’m here this week for Microsoft’s Windows Hardware Engineering Conference, where the speakers today include Bill Gates. Microsoft, hardware companies and device makers typically use this annual conference to talk amongst themselves and show what’s on the horizon. Among other things, Microsoft and device makers this year are showing new phones that will work with the company’s business communications software.”

The VAR guy states that hell has frozen over now that Tech Data is offering 13 Macs models with Windows XP.

“The other shoe has finally dropped. When Apple transitioned its hardware to Intel processors, many pundits wondered when Macintoshes would come pre-loaded with Windows. Well, Apple still isn’t ready to make that move. But a big IT distributor is. Tech Data now offers 13 Macintosh configurations with Windows XP and Parallels preinstalled. Parallels is the increasingly popular virtualization software that allows Windows XP and Mac OS to live and run side-by-side on Apple hardware. The Macintosh systems with Windows XP preinstalled are available through Tech Data’s AppleAdvantage Specialized Business Unit (SBU).Tech Data’s move highlights the growing popularity of running Windows XP on Macintosh hardware, and it also reinforces the fact that the transition to Windows Vista will be a slow one for the foreseeable future.”

“Apropos to my earliest post today about the American media’s upfront sessions this week, this just in from Forrester Research: There ain’t no future in paid video downloads via the Intertubes. Forrester estimates that paid videos will peak in 2007, generating $279 million in revenue (and up from $98 million last year). It’s all about the online sandwich or predicate ad that gets wrapped up either before the video download, during the video download, at the end of the video download, or in there somewhere. The Forrester research summary also indicates this could be a boon for TV networks allowing for ad-supported downloads of prime-time TV shows. I think on demand delivery of such content is a boon for this type of approach. You want to give me “The Sopranos” downloadable to my iPod so I can watch it on demand? I’ll watch some ads, no problemo. ”
