Women in the IT channel: Jennifer Corriero

You can make a case that Jennifer Corriero was born to lead. Before her 20th birthday, when most young adults are thinking about school and socializing, Corriero started a not-for-profit organization with the thought to empower youth through technology.

Today this organization she co-founded, called TakingITGlobal.org, has touched more than 300,000 people from 200 countries speaking 12 languages. This is an amazing accomplishment for anyone, let alone someone who’s still under 30.

TakingITGlobal.org is a youth-led organization built around an interactive Web site that allows young people around the world to collaborate on various online projects, which target local, regional and global issues. The organization boasts several hundred virtual volunteers.

Corriero has also been referred to as the leader of the Net Generation in Canada.

That kind of success has made Corriero an overnight sensation. She has received impressive titles for a 20-something such as being selected by the World Economic Forum as a Young Global Leader and a Global Leader for Tomorrow. Corriero was also Wired Women’s Young Woman of the Year.

Just a few years ago, she was asked by Canada’s Governor General Michele Jean to be an official delegate on a state visit to Brazil. Microsoft‘s Bill Gates noticed her talent and asked her along with Michael Furdyk (TakingITGlobal co-founder) to lead the software giant’s youth engagement project.

“Technology is the common thread throughout everything we do, from delivering programs to how we outreach to youth using social networking tools as a platform for youth to become more educated and aware of global issues,” said Corriero in a previous interview.
