CES 2015: Early product announcements from HP, Lenovo, LG and more

Consumer Electronics Association CEO Gary Shapiro at Intel's 2014 Keynote at CES

With CES 2015 in full swing this week, here’s CDN’s pick of some of the most intriguing gadgets announced so far.

PCs

While some would argue that the era of PC’s is coming to an end, HP would have you believe otherwise with not one but two desktops.

The company has announced the HP Pavilion Mini Desktop and the HP Stream Mini Desktop, two compact nearly identical PCs that pack Windows 8.1, Intel Core i3, 1 TB of storage and up to 8GB of expandale memory into a 2” thick, 1.6 lbs package.

Both machines also feature dual display support with DisplayPort and HDMI with Quad HD support and high energy efficiency, with the only differences, aside from the colour, being that the Stream also comes with a 32 GB solid-state drive (SSD) and 200 GB of Microsoft OneDrive Storage for two years and credits for Windows Store purchases.

It’s interesting to note that HP is marketing the units as home entertainment systems.  They’re set to launch in the United States on January 14.

HP is not alone in fighting for the PC market, however, with Lenovo announcing the latest addition to the ThinkPad line.  The X1 Carbon claims to be the thinnest 14” ultrabook coming in at 17.7 mm thick and 1.3 kg in weight.

Additional products announced by Lenovo include the ThinkVision X24, a thinner and nearly bezel-free HD monitor, a slew of other ThinkPads in the T and E lines and accessories.  Check out the full list here.

Networking

Linksys has announced it will be expanding the WRT line to feature the WRT1200AC, a 2×2 Dual Band Wireless AC Router, which supports speeds up to 1.3 Gbps and features eSATA/USB 2.0 and USB 3.0 ports.

The company has also announced the WRT Network Storage Bay, Dual Band High-Gain Antennas, the MU-MIMO AC2600 Router, two new range extenders as well as support for Open WRT and OpenVPN.

Mobile Accessories

While CES 2015 is not short on announcements in mobile and wearables, many may be looking to accessories to enhance their existing smartphone experience.

Belkin has announced a slew of charging solutions, the key one being the Qi Wireless Charging Pad, Power Pack 2000, and a variety of MIXIT Power Packs that also mix in includes auxiliary and charging cables, and home and car chargers.

IoT and Smart Homes

Aside from wearables taking off, the other big trend taking the show is the connected home.

IoT company WeMo announced a line of sensors for windows and doors, the keychain, and room motion detectors and alarms to make homes more contextually aware.

There’s even a device that monitors water usage.

TVs

Lastly, it would not be CES without the latest and greatest in TVs, and this year is no exception.

LG alone is bringing seven different 4K OLED TVs to the show this year, including flexible, curved and flat models at 55”, 65” and 77” display sizes.
