CES: HP launches affordable Pavilion Sleekbook laptops

Hewlett-Packard Co. (NYSE: HPQ) used the Consumer Electronics Showcase (CES) in Las Vegas this week to unveil a new slim entry in the low end of the consumer laptop space.

Dubbed the HP Pavilion Sleekbook, it’s a 15.6” laptop that offers a touchscreen option, with pricing beginning at US$499 (US$699 with touch), depending on the options selected. While they have many of the attributes of the Ultrabook category, HP is using the term Sleekbook to give it the flexibility to not meet all of Intel’s requirements for using its Ultrabook trademark – such as offering AMD’s A8 APU instead of Intel’s Core chipset.

The new models will be available this spring.
