Western Digital claims to have launched its smallest external hard disk drive. It’s called MyPassportEdge and boasts 500GB of storage capacity, reports Lucas Mearian of ComputerWorld:
”The new drives are 4.34 inches long by 3.2-inches wide and .5-inches thick. The drives are also an upgrade from the USB 2.0 (480Mbps) to the USB 3.0 (5Gbps) USB I/O interface.”

That’s pretty small, and USB 3.0 offers a nice speed boost as well. It’s been a bounce-back year for Western Digital, which had to shut down several of its key disk drive plants last year after devastating monsoonal floods in Thailand, putting a major crimp in its earnings and market standing.
But by July, market research firm IHS iSuppli reported that WD had recaptured its disk drive market share lead from chief rival Seagate, returning to pre-flooding drive shipment levels.
