After driving Intel acquisition, DeWalt leaves McAfee

After four years as president of security vendor McAfee Inc. and overseeing its acquisition by processor giant Intel Corp. (NASDAQ: INTC), Dave DeWalt’s resignation was announced by the company Tuesday.

It will take two executives to fill DeWalt’s shoes, with Michael DeCesare and Todd Gebhart tapped as co-presidents. They’ll report directly to Renée James, Intel senior vice-president and group general manager, and chairman of McAfee subsidiary. Both are current McAfee executives; DeCesare is executive vice-president for global operations, and Gebhart is executive vice-president and general manager, consumer, mobile and small business. And DeWalt won’t be out of the picture entirely, remaining as a non-employee member of the McAfee board.

In a statement, James said Intel continues to be very pleased with McAfee’s performance in terms of both sales and innovation.

“With the formation of the office of the president, we have two proven executives with long histories of accomplishment and leadership at McAfee,” said James. “I appreciate Dave’s many contributions to the company and look forward to continuing to work with him on the McAfee board of directors. We anticipate a smooth transition and I am confident that the incredibly talented people of McAfee will remain focused on innovation, delivering products and services that help make connecting to the digital world safer and more secure.”

DeWalt added in a statement he’ll be leaving McAfee in good hands.

“We had strong results, a record quarter and a great pipeline of innovation,” said We have a very strong foundation for the second half of 2011 and I look forward to serving on McAfee’s board of directors.”

When he visited Toronto in November, DeWalt was bullish about McAfee’s future under Intel. In this video interview with CDN, he spoke about the challenges going forward and the channel opportunity.
