Canadian government and businesses across the country help deliver used computers to schools

The Computers for Schools program, which is made possible with the help of Industry Canada and TelecomPioneers, delivered its one millionth refurbished computer to schools across the country.

The program was launched in 2003 and promotes the reuse of computers that are donated by businesses and the government.

With help from IT students and volunteers, the used computers have a longer lifespan of between three to five years for school and not-for-profit organization use. By offering sustainable reusable, donated computers, there are 20 times more energy savings than if they were to be recycled.

The program is also partnered with Canada’s Youth Employment Strategy, which provides about 4,100 interns with experience in the ICT (information and communications technology) sector. Youths are therefore able to gain real-life experience to help obtain a career in the field later on.

Companies such as Microsoft Canada, Bell Canada, Bell Aliant, TELUS, SaskTel, MTS Communications, the Canadian National Railway Company and the Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce have all been key contributors to the Computers for Schools program.
