James Sherwood provides details around Toshiba’s recently announced standalone Blu-ray disc player.

“The BDX2000 delivers ‘high image quality and sophisticated design,’ according to Toshiba, with full support for 1080p and 24fps playback. The player’s also set up to upscale DVDs to 1080p, Toshiba added. The BDX2000 hooks up to your HD TV through an HDMI connection, while the player’s other features include DivX and AVCHD playback, picture-in-picture, and support for Dolby TrueHD audio.”

Cisco Subnet reveals a rumour that Cisco and EMC will embark on a jointly-funded project of some sort, reportedly under the code-name, “Alpine.”

“The joint venture is said to be a separate company chartered to integrate, sell and install new data center compute, networking, storage and virtualization products to enterprises and service providers. The name of the company is still unknown but Cisco and EMC are actively recruiting sales personnel for it, sources say.”

Smartphones to eclipse desktop PC sales by 2011

Andrew Nusca writes that according to Mike Abramsky, an analyst at RBC, smartphone sales will soon surpass global PC sales by the end of 2011.

“RBC analyst Mike Abramsky estimates that shipments of both devices will approach 400 million per year at that time, PCWorld reports. The shift has traditional computer manufacturers scrambling to enter the mobile space. While Apple already has a leading position in the market, Dell, Acer, HP, Microsoft and Google all have their eyes on the mobile arena.”
