Dell confirms first Android-based smartphone

James Sherwood shares some details around Dell’s recently announced Android-based smartphone device.
“(Dell) has confirmed that the Mini 3i is based on the iPhone platform – a China Mobile developed smartphone platform based on version 1.5 of Android, the latter meaning that developers can use both the oPhone’s API and Android’s API to write iPhone applications.”
HP: Q4 will be better than expected

Timothy Prickett Morgan writes about HP’s Q4 financial expectations.
“HP said that it expects revenues will fall eight per cent to $30.8 billion from the year-ago quarter, which is only down five per cent when measured in constant currency and up 12 per cent from the third fiscal quarter of the year ended in July. HP did not provide preliminary net income figures, but did say that it expected earnings per share, on a GAAP basis, to be 99 cents, up 17.9 per cent from Q4 of fiscal 2008.”
Novell targets netbooks with latest OS

Kelly Fiveash writes why Novell’s looking to pick up some of the industry’s current netbook market share.
“The latest version of the operating system clearly signals Novell’s intent to scoop up some share of the nascent netbook market. OpenSUSE 11.2 comes loaded with version 2.6.31 of the Linux kernel, while the default file system of the OS has been switched to the new Ext4. However, support for Ext3 and other file systems is available, too.”
