Gateway further details 2008 laptop plans

Acer has said its acquisition of Gateway will bring something new to the U.S. company’s laptop PC lineup, but in the first quarter of 2008, new laptops will still all be designed by Gateway.

Gateway plans to launch its first high-end notebook PC designed specifically for gamers in the first quarter, as well as updated colors and features for its C-Series, M-Series, T-Series and P-Series products, according to Lisa Emard, director of media relations at Gateway.

“Gaming is a big growth category, and Gateway has been successful in this space. We will continue offering innovative gaming products across all platforms (desktops, notebooks and displays),” she said in an e-mail.

The first completely new laptop line for Gateway will be consumer notebooks slated to debut ahead of the holiday season in 2008.

As for Acer’s impact on Gateway in laptops, users will have to wait and see.

“Gateway probably won’t have any laptops in the first quarter with Acer flavors and techniques or design,” said Henry Wang, senior public relations manager at Acer.

Meantime, Acer plans to review Gateway’s product roadmap and see where it can make changes to enhance and enlarge its offerings, he added.

Acer has risen to the rank of third-biggest PC maker by shipments largely due to its strength in notebook PCs, a segment currently growing far faster than desktops.
