Classic PC gaming service Good Old Games has shut down. In a statement on its Web site, the operators said after long consideration, the digital-rights-free download service concluded it could no longer operate the site in its current form.
“We have recently had to give serious thought to whether we could really keep GOG.com the way it is. We’ve debated on it for quite some time and, unfortunately, we’ve decided that GOG.com simply cannot remain in its current form,” a statement on Good Old Games reads.
GamePro contacted a spokesperson for the site and is awaiting comment.
Backed by The Witcher developer CD Projekt, Good Old Games launched in September 2008. Customers could purchase and download old games — and redownload them — and play them on modern PCs. Its library included classics such as the Descent, Fallout, and Freespace. Good Old Games’ statement says it’ll have a process in place sometime this week to allows customers to redownload their purchased games.
Gamers had reason for more optimism about Good Old Games’ future earlier this year when two publishers with significant back catalogs — Activision and Atari — started offering games such as Gabriel Knight and Master of Orion on the service.
The statement about Good Old Games’ closure may contain some hope for fans of playing classic PC games in modern times.
“This doesn’t mean the idea behind GOG.com is gone forever. We’re closing down the service and putting this era behind us as new challenges await,” the statement reads.
