Groundhog day news and notes

There are two things that are of importance today. First, it’s Friday. Which means only two more days until the Super Bowl. I hope the Colts crush the Bears. The Bears have been lucky all year and did not deserve to make this big game.

Second, it’s ground hog day. And Wiarton Willie did not see his shadow and therefore there will be an early end to a winter. Let’s hope so.

In IT related news, it looks like Apple has come to its senses and has agreed to come to the negotiation table and deal with Cisco on the right to use the name iPhone. No announcement is forthcoming, as the two parties have just agreed on a meeting to discuss things.

The devil may be wearing Prada, but his cell phone will be from LG. LG has partnered with the fashion house on a Prada-branded phone with touch screen interface. Right now it will be initially available at Prada stores in Europe and Asia at just under $1,000.

Three quick hits before I go. In the Netherlands a court pronounced a sentence on two botnet hackers to time served. That means they are free to go. The two men released the Trojan horse called Toxbot that hijacked literally millions of PCs to do all sorts of scams.

Red Hat, the open source developer, has hired Gery Messer for a newly created position of president of Asia Pacific.
