Gartner gives data centre energy-saving tips

Deni Connor shares some of research firm, Gartner’s tips on how to save on energy in the data centre.
“Gartner predicts that energy, space and technology problems will worsen in 2010 and that IT managers will need to find pragmatic ways to deal with them. According to Gartner, removing a single x86 server from a data centre will save $400 a year in energy costs. Gartner says that IT needs to analyze their data centre costs, consolidate data centre sites, manage energy and facilities costs and further, manage people costs. Among tips Gartner made were raising the temperature of the data centre to 24 degrees Celsius, using outside air as an alternative to air conditioning, using blanking plates and adopting hot aisle/cold aisle configurations.”

Server sales stabilizing, says study

“According to the box counters at Gartner … worldwide server revenues fell by 15.5 per cent in Q3, to $10.7 billion. And shipments fell even faster, down 17.1 per cent, to 1.92 million units. While there are some currency effects that make the server racket seem a bit stronger in terms of revenues as sales are translated into strengthening U.S. dollars, the fact that the market has grown sequentially from the second quarter – as it almost always does – was cause for relief. But not yet celebration.”
