HP grabs former Microsoft executive to run software business

Hewlett-Packard on Wednesday announced it had appointed former Microsoft executive Bill Veghte to run the company’s software business.

Veghte previously ran the Windows business at Microsoft and was responsible for the launch of the Windows 7 OS last year. He will serve in the role of executive vice president of HP’s US$3.6 billion software and solutions business starting on May 17.

Veghte will report to Ann Livermore, who is the executive vice president of HP’s enterprise business. HP’s software offerings include IT management, information management and business intelligence offerings.

Veghte left Microsoft in February after spending around 20 years at the company’s software business. Veghte helped “re-energize the Windows franchise,” wrote Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer in a statement announcing Veghte’s departure.”
