Donald Melanson writes about Windows 7 and HP netbooks.

“How many versions of Windows 7 can a netbook run? Three, and possibly more, according to HP’s Kyle Thornton, who recently attempted to “clarify” the situation in an interview with Computerworld. Those include in the main Professional and Home Premium editions, as well as the low-end Starter edition which, among other things, is limited to running no more than three applications at a time.”

IDC confirms PC chip sales have fallen off a cliff
Channel Register
Chris Mellor includes IDC findings about PC and microprocessor shipments for last year’s fourth quarter.

“The last quarter of 2008 saw a 17 per cent decline in shipments compared to Q3, and an 11.4 per cent fall compared to Q4 2007. The associated revenue number for Q4 declined 18 per cent sequentially and 22.2 per cent year-on-year to $6.78 billion. IDC reckons demand remains so weak that it expects sequential processor unit shipments to decline in both this first quarter of 2009 and the next.”
