IT spending higher than expected in 2010

Timothy Prickett Morgan shares IDC’s IT spending outlook for this year.
“Peering into the crystal ball, IDC says that the cloud computing phenomenon will start eating into hardware spending, which will cool to 10 per cent growth in 2011, and software and services will grow by five per cent and four per cent, respectively. Overall IT spending, again in constant currency, is expected to add another $10 billion or so, rising seven per cent to $1.65 trillion.”
CIOs more confident about outlook, hiring plans

Larry Dignan shares survey points from a study conducted by Robert Half Technology, that included responses from 1,400 CIOs .
“Nine per cent of CIOs plan to expand their IT departments with two per cent planning cutbacks. Overall, that tally is a net seven per cent increase in IT hiring activity. Eighty per cent of CIOs are confident in their company’s growth products, 73 per cent of CIOs were at least ‘somewhat optimistic’ about their companies investing in IT projects in the quarter ahead.”
The iPad 3 and what Apple needs to deliver

Jason Perlow shares his thoughts on what Apple will need to do for its upcoming iPad 3 device.
“The iPad 2 is now here. For the most part, much of what I thought would be in the new model did actually come to fruition, but I got a number of surprises and also some disappointments as well. The iPad 2 is clearly a strong second act following the first device, but the improvements are still more or less incremental. In the third version, Apple is going to have to up the ante considerably, because its competitors are going to have plenty of time in 2011 getting their respective offerings honed and improved for the next product cycle.”
