It’s cooler!

AMD has announced more low-power Opteron CPUs for servers.

They include five single socket processors (models 1210 HE, 1214 HE, 1216 HE and 1128 HE) that each use 68 watts in speeds from 2.6Ghz to 1.8Ghz; a dual core (model 2218) and a quad core (model 8218 HE), each running at 2.6Ghz; and two 95 watt, 2.8Ghz processors (the dual core model 2220 and the quad core 8220).

Dean McCarron, principal at Mercury Research, said the new models will likely be used in blade servers, because their density demands processors that give off as little heat as possible.

Kishna Weaver, AMD’s Opteron product manager, said the latest CPUs illustrate the company’s “focus on driving more performance into even lower-powered products.”

The new single socket processors mark a large drop in AMD’s power consumption CPUs, she said. The rest of the 1000-series line uses 103 watts.

Prices of the new entries range from U$1,514 for the quad core 8220 and US$1,340 for the 82117 HE to US$168 for the single core 1210 HE.
