VMware update: Two rough quarters

Dan Kimerling shares IDC’s findings of VMware’s market share results regarding the enterprise x86 virtualization space.
“Research by IDC, and first reported by ComputerWorld, shows that VMWare’s market share of the enterprise X86 virtualization market fell from a reported 51per cent during 2007 to 44 per cent during the third quarter of 2008. At the same time Microsoft’sHyper-V virtualization product has already had a material impact on Microsoft’s market share, even though the product was only released three months ago, as Microsoft’s market share jumped to 23 per cent during the third quarter, up from 18 per cent in the first quarter of 2008.”
Report: HP working on touchscreen laptop; new netbook

John Morris provides some information here on a new notebook PC offering from HP that is set to feature a touchscreen display.
“HP has hired Frog Design–the company behind the HP Touchsmart IQ500 and IQ800–to design the hardware while an internal team is refining the touch-enabled user interface that runs on top of Microsoft Windows. HP confirmed that the company is working on a family of touchscreen devices, but gave no details.”
MSI Wind 2 Netbook set for November release

Brian Chen provides details about MSI’s new Wind U120 netbook, which is to be released in some places by next month.
“The MSI Wind U120 will receive a complete redesign, sporting a new case, a new hard drive, a solid-state drive option and a 3.5G modem. Like its predecessor, the U120 will feature Intel’s Atom processor. DigiTimes reports a November launch date in Asia, but it’s unclear whether the netbook will arrive in the United States that soon. However, the first MSI Wind hit U.S. stores in June, and five or six months is generally the lifespan of a notebook before it receives an upgrade.”
