Top IT Priorities for 2011

Jon Oltsik shares the top five IT priorities for mid-market (500-1000 employees) and enterprise (more than 1000 employees) businesses according to findings from ESG Research’s 2011 Spending Intentions survey.
“Over the next 12-18 months: 30 per cent increase use of server virtualization, 24 per cent manage data growth, 24 per cent information security initiatives, 23 per cent major application deployments or upgrades, 22 per cent improve data backup and recovery.”
Small biz would pay more for simpler tax

John Oates writes that small business owners would pay more tax “if the system was simpler and it cracked down on tax avoidance by their competitors.”
“Smaller firms believe they’re at an unfair disadvantage compared to bigger companies. Most smaller companies also complained that the tax system deters them from hiring more staff. The Forum of Private Business surveyed its Tax and Budget member panel in response to the government’s promise to review the tax system via the Office for Tax Simplification. Some 57 per cent of those surveyed said they would pay more tax in exchange for a simpler system and less red tape.”
First Look: Firefox 4 Beta 9

“On Friday Mozilla released Firefox 4 Beta 9, which will probably be the final beta build – finally! – for this browser before we hit Release Candidate and an official release sometime towards the end of February. Going by the release notes there’s only two changes of any importance highlighted by Mozilla: overhaul of the bookmarks and history code, enabling faster bookmarking and startup performance and per-compartment garbage collection is now enabled, reducing work done during complex animations.”
