New Dell laptops ship with wheat straw for packaging

Dell has updated its mid-level Inspiron line with new laptops, an all-in-one PC and a touch monitor with new design and materials and Intel’s 4th generation Haswell processors.

Among the new offerings are new thinner and stronger Inspiron 7000 series laptops, Inspiron 11 3000 Series ultraportables with a slim new design, and an Inspiron 23 all-in-one with a 10-finger capacitive touch display.

“Consumers today are looking for PCs that are not only dependable and easy to use, but are packed with all of the features they want in a thin, upscale design,” said Ray Wah, vice-president, Dell consumer PC group, in a statement. “We think this is our best Inspiron line-up ever, and we’re really proud of the tremendous value that we can provide to our customers.”

According to Dell, its Inspiron 7000 Series laptops feature diamond-cut beveled edges and a forged aluminum design. They feature a 10-finger, capacitive touch display with edge-to-edge Corning Gorilla Glass NBT. The Inspiron 14 and 15 can be upgraded to optional Full HD, and all the models have backlit keyboards as standard. Buyers can choose between Intel’s latest Core i5 and i7 processors, and SSD options are available on the Inspiron 15 and Inspiron 17.

Dell boasts its Inspiron 7000 Series is breaking new ground by using wheat straw, left over during the wheat harvest, as part of its packaging to help reduce its carbon footprint. The wheat straw would otherwise usually be burned by farmers.

On the ultraportable front, Dell has its new Inspiron 11 3000 Series. It has an 11.6-inch, 10-finger capacitive touch display and noise-cancelling, dual-array microphones. It measures 0.83” thin and weighs as little as 3.15 lbs, depending on configuration, with battery life of up to 8 hours, 20.

Moving to the desktop, the Inspiron 23 is an all-in-one PC with a 23”, full HD, 10-finger capacitive touch display, and an articulating stand to tilt the screen for a better touch experience, or even lay it flat. Dell also launched new 20”, 23” and 27” touch displays, with 1600 x 900 HD resolution on the 20” model and Full HD 1920 x 1080 resolution on the 23” and 27” displays.

The Inspiron 7000 series are available now, starting at $799 for the Inspiron 15, and $899 for the Inspiron 14 and 17. The 11 3000 Series starts at $379.99 with availability on Oct. 3. And available on Oct. 1, the Inspiron 23 all-in-one PC starts at $999.99.
