Now even your laundry is cloud-enabled

Will the cloud madness never end? Not any time soon, it would seem. As Jay Alabaster of the IDG News Service reports, even your laundry has a place in the cloud according to Panasonic:

Panasonic is showing its latest home appliances at the Ceatec electronics exhibition, and everything – washing machines, refrigerators, rice cookers – connects to the internet. The company has released a steady stream of “smart appliances” this year, all of which use smartphones to connect with online services.

It seems like at least a decade now that we’ve been hearing vendors talking about Internet-connect and so-called smart appliances, like the fridge that knows you’re out of milk and sends you a text to pick some up on your way home from work. The technology has never really seemed to take off though, perhaps because many really fail to see the point of a toaster oven with a web connection.

Panasonic’s new line of smart appliances interact with your smart phone so now when it comes to your laundry, there’s an app for that. The question remains though, why?
