Piracy puts profits at peril

Microsoft must validate the OS prior to offering updates. It helps because it levels the playing field for honest channel partners. If Microsoft implements the same policy to all its other products, I think the honest channel players will become very happy campers.Few of our customers come to purchase more OSs from us. In the past, they bought naked PCs without an operating system.
Microsoft has introduced the Windows Genuine Advantage program. It will validate the OS prior to allowing the users to update and/or obtain patches and software. According to Microsoft, the similar program will be introduced to its other products by September.
I heard a story that the neighbour of a Microsoft staffer was concerned about being sued by Microsoft. His son had downloaded a crack copy of XP Pro. His machine came with XP Home. When he tried to update, a warning popped up saying ‘counterfeit OS.’ He was advised by the Microsoft staffer to reload the XP Home and everything would be OK.
Microsoft can enhance its program against counterfeit by lowering the cost. Currently, Microsoft products are similar to paper gold. People can make more money by pirating Microsoft than counterfeit money, and the risk is less.
Also, people are attracted to download crack copies because they can’t afford the Microsoft applications.
Further than fighting piracy, it helps to improve the level playing field between the system builders and the Tier One manufacturers. The current PC leader often offers PCs at prices so low that a system builder can apply the same amount to buy CPU, OS and HDD only.
