Symantec closes fiscal year with net income up

CUPERTINO, Calif. — Symantec Corp. wound up its latest fiscal year with net income of $404 million (all figures in U.S. dollars), substantially up from the $157 million for fiscal 2006.

Revenue for the year ending March 30 was $5.2 billion.

It also said net income in the fourth quarter was $61 million, compared to $119 million for the same quarter last year. It blamed part of that fall on a $51 million restructuring charge related to layoffs and money spent consolidating facilities.

“The actions we implemented over the past few quarters to improve our business operations allowed us to end our fiscal year with a solid March quarter,” said chairman and CEO John Thompson.

“With a more stable operating environment and a much stronger product portfolio, we look forward to a stronger fiscal year 2008.”

In the last quarter Symantec’s consumer business represented 30 percent of total non-GAAP revenue and grew 11 percent year-over-year. Services represented five percent of total revenue and grew 31 percent year-over-year.

The security and data management business represented 38 percent of total revenue and grew two per cent year-over-year. The data center management business represented 27 percent of total revenue and remained flat year-over-year.

For the fiscal year ending March 28, the company expects GAAP revenue will be between $5.59 billion and $5.69 billion.
