Symantec Corp. will enhance its NetBackup PureDisk data deduplication solution to address critical requirements for data center backup architectures.
The company said that leveraging PureDisk data deduplication as part of an overall backup strategy, organizations can dramatically reduce storage and bandwidth consumed from disk-based backups.
New capabilities planned for the June release of NetBackup PureDisk include integration with Veritas Backup Reporter, improvements to storage availability and expanded security features for both enterprise customers and backup service providers.

Veritas Backup Reporter allows the consolidation of reporting on the backup activities of PureDisk, NetBackup and other major backup applications. With centralized backup reporting and the ability to plan growth based on the historical data of all backup types, customers can better manage and customize their backup methods that include tape backups, snapshots and data deduplication from PureDisk.
The upcoming release will also add online failover for PureDisk environments with multiple servers. In large backup environments, if the server that controls PureDisk storage experiences an outage, failover to a standby server can be executed in minutes. A spare PureDisk server can be configured on any compatible hardware, giving IT organizations flexibility to increase the availability of their backup environment with minimal investment.
A new Data Lock feature will give enterprises and service providers a new level of data security by enabling an end-user customer to apply a unique password to their data. The feature secures all backup data of this end user with an additional password that prevents PureDisk system administrators from accessing that data. The password controls access to the data, but does not interrupt the backup process. Backup jobs that use Data Lock run as scheduled, but backup administrators cannot browse or restore data without entering the Data Lock password.
