Server sales went over the cliff in Q4: IDC

Paul McNamara writes about the recent decline in server sales.
“The Wall Street Journal breaks the carnage down by vendor: ‘The sinking tide grounded all four major server makers, which are listed here with their revenue declines in order of market share: IBM, off 15 per cent, Hewlett-Packard, off 10.1 per cent, Dell, off 9.9 per cent and Sun Microsystems, off 14.1 per cent.’”
Gartner: Global IT spending will rise in 2009 (slightly)

Timothy Prickett Morgan writes that according to Gartner research firm, IT spending across all verticals and geographies around the world will slightly rise this year.
“The uneven impact of the economic meltdown will continue to be reflected in uneven IT spending growth or decline across industries. Healthcare, utilities, and government IT spending are going to get the lion’s share of the growth this year, it looks like, and for all the talk of declines in IT spending among financial services companies, the declines are more modest than perhaps many would have expected, given the dire straits many companies are trying to negotiate through.”
Dell Cripples Mini 10 with Non-Upgradeable RAM

Charlie Sorrel takes a closer look at Dell’s new Mini 10 netbook.
“The machine, which could be pre-ordered from last week, is supplied with 1GB RAM, a pretty usual configuration. The problem? It can not be upgraded. Normally you can drop an extra gig into a netbook in a matter of minutes, but according to Lionel Menchaca, Dell’s Chief Blogger, ‘all Mini 10s will come with 1GB fixed RAM (which means it will not be upgradable).’”
