Logitech steps up job cuts

John Oates writes that Swiss company, Logitech will be making 600 job cuts due to the economy. The company had predicted earlier that it would only be cutting 525 positions.
“Sales for the third quarter of fiscal 2009 were down 16 per cent to $627 million and operating profit was down a whopping 63 per cent to $43 million. Gross margins were down to 29.9 per cent versus 36.9 per cent in the same period of 2008, thanks to the strong dollar and retail promotions.”
Microsoft to deliver Windows Mobile 6.5 in mid-2009

Andrew Nusca reveals the latest news on Microsoft’s Windows Mobile 6.5 OS release, which is expected to be available later this year.
“ A number of Windows Mobile 6.5-based mobile devices are expected to hit the market in the third quarter of 2009, but most handset makers will likely to launch their Windows Mobile 6.5 handsets in the fourth quarter to get a jump on the year-end shopping season, according to the article. As CEO Steve Ballmer hinted in his CES keynote, Microsoft is expected to cooperate with multiple device makers for the development of diversified Windows Mobile 6.5 products instead of focusing on a single model as Apple’s iPhone or Google’s Android-based G1 phone (or, in the case of the latest batch of rumours, Palm’s Pre).”
Ericsson slashes 5,000 jobs, blames Sony partnership

Thomas Ricker offers some background behind Ericsson’s recently announced job cuts.
“With profits tumbling 31 per cent, Ericsson just announced its intent to shed 5,000 jobs across the globe (1,000 in Stockholm). The loss resulting from a ‘dramatic drop’ in contributions from its Sony Ericsson joint venture. The 5k figure represents about six per cent of Ericsson’s 79,000 employees.”
