Adapter transforms home wiring into Gigabit Ethernet network

TP-Link Canada Inc. released a power line adapter kit that can turn the typical home electrical wiring into a high-speed Gigabit Ethernet network.

With data transfer rates of up to 600 Megabits per second, the TL-PA6010KIT can transmit multiple high definition streams and is much faster than typical Wi-Fi speeds, especially when a wireless signal needs to reach different levels of the building or pass through walls, according to the networking product manufacturer.

TL-PA6010 measures only 63mm wide x 47mm deep x 40mm high, and comes with a single high-speed Gigabit Ethernet port which enables it to connect to any Ethernet-compatible wired device such as a set-top box, game console or NAS media server.

The adapter also has a unique power-saving mode that reduces power consumption by up to 80 percent and supports the Internet Group Management Protocol (IGMP) for enhanced IPTV streaming. It has Quality of Service (QoS) – a multimedia optimization function – which prioritizes the bandwidth requirements of data traffic, including voice, video and online gaming.

Other features include:

“The Powerline kit offers high-speed Gigabit Ethernet performance using a home’s existing electrical wiring, says Mark Macaulay, director of sales for TP-LINK Canada. “With TP-LINK Powerline, you just place an adapter in a room where reliable connectivity is desired and start enjoying your home entertainment network.”

Setting up a Powerline network is simple compared with stringing traditional CAT-5 cabling throughout a home, he said. All that is needed is to connect the first adapter to a home router; place the second adapter into the wall socket where the connection needs to be extended (up to a 300 meter range); then press the “Pair” button.

In less than 30 seconds, a Powerline network is quickly established, complete with 128-bit AES security encryption. The network can be readily extended by adding HomePlug AV-compliant Powerline adapters in sets of two.
