CommVault to bring file system archiving to the Mac market

CommVault Systems Inc., together with network software solution vendor, Group Logic, are working together to bring file archiving solutions to Mac-based environments.

CommVault’s flagship software product, better known as Simpana, helps businesses with their data protection, archiving, search and resource management tasks. Now, with a recently announced partnership with Arlington, Va.-based Group Logic, the companies are now extending the same capabilities into the Mac-space.

Simon Taylor, senior director of Information Access Management at CommVault, said teaming with Group Logic, creates additional market opportunities for partners to offer more storage-related offerings in the file market space.

“We now have a seamless (solution) experience for Mac users,” Taylor said. “This works well in markets such as education, advertising, media, and any other organization where there are heavy Mac-users.”

Andy Lewis, senior vice-president of business development at Group Logic, said the company focuses on helping customers integrate Mac systems with existing enterprise and other IT infrastructures.

Lewis said that because of the large amount of data that’s typically generated by Macs, the requirement for file system archiving solutions, is paramount.

“The partnership (with CommVault), is all about bringing Simpana’s value to a customer base that has big storage challenges but has never had the opportunity to take advantage of Simpana to solve them,” Lewis said. “A key goal for (us) is to bring a fully Mac-compatible file system archiving solution to our customers and any customer with Macs.”

With Group Logic’s ArchiveConnect client application, the Mac desktop has the ability to differentiate between any online and archived files, while treating these files as if they were offline. This helps to eliminate any unnecessary data recalls in the system. CommVault’s Simpana software works together with Group Logic’s ArchiveConnect so Mac and Windows-users can control and view archived items.

“When a Mac browses a CommVault Simpana archive, the user sees a true representation of everything that’s been archived on the Mac,” Taylor said. “The user can control any archived items, almost as if they were using a Windows system.”

Lewis says by delivering the combined Simpana and ArchiveConnect solution, new market segments and customer opportunities will emerge to grow both the vendors and their partners’ revenues. Partners can also go to market by offering customers both Simpana and ArchiveConnect as a packaged solution, Taylor added.

“By making this solution available to our customers, we can bring them an important new tool to help manage storage more effectively,” Lewis explained.

Taylor says partners can expect to see some lead generation activities and other related programs regarding the Group Logic partnership in the early part of the year.
