New products from Xerox

Xerox Corp. is attempting to gain a solid advantage in office market space with its latest products in colour printer technology.

The company recently hosted a live worldwide broadcast via satellite from New York to launch two new platforms aimed at production and office markets.

Under

the new platforms, Xerox Canada announced five new products including the DocuTech 100 and 120 copier/printers and the Phaser 8400, 4500 and 7750 colour laser printers.

With a starting price of $1,399, Xerox says it plans to target the Phaser 8400 to the small and medium-sized businesses looking to make the switch from black and white to colour printers.

“”With this speed and quality it’s going to overpower the competition in that space,”” said Doug Lord, president and CEO of Xerox Canada.

Based on a solid ink technology platform — an alternative to colour laser printing — Xerox said the Phaser 8400 offers customers a low-price product with the quality and speed that’s normally associated with higher-priced equipment. Solid ink also produces less waste than traditional colour laser cartridges, making it more environmentally friendly.

“”Solid ink is a very positive technology for us,”” said Lord. “”We think in this sub-$1,500 market it will bring the economics to our customers that will help them move more dramatically from printing in black and white to printing in colour.””

The other two printers in the Phaser line, the 4500 black-and-white printer, priced from $1,389, and the 7750 colour laser printer for graphic arts professionals, priced from $7,949, are also scheduled to ship immediately.

Xerox Canada hopes to increase its reseller base by 25 per cent with this product, said Donna Wittmann, regional vice-president, Canada office printing business for Xerox Canada. The company currently has hundreds of resellers across the country.

“”We’re entering this space of the market with a high-performance, high-speed product,”” said Wittmann. “”The only thing that’s stripped out is the price.””
