Gartner: 5 tips for cutting data center power consumption

Heather Clancy shares tips from research firm Gartner on how to minimize power consumption in the data centre.
“Use row and rack-based cooling for high-density equipment, which apparently can reduce energy usage by up to 15 per cent, build and provision only what is needed, user air-side economizers in geographies where they work (you may already have air handlers that support this), scrutinize floor layouts for optimal air movement and virtualize everywhere you can, especially on commodity hardware that eat up a lot of electricity.”

“Apple has released the first major software update for the iPad. The 4.2 version of iOS brings a slew of new capabilities to the iPad, including many that will be of interest to business professionals and to IT departments that have deployed or are considering a deployment of the iPad. The update, which is available as a free download through iTunes, is the first jump to iOS 4 for the iPad: multitasking, AirPlay, wireless app distribution, AirPrint, Find My iPad, folders, unified inbox, remote device management, Web browser search on page and new quick controls console.”
Toshiba and Vizio expected to join Google TV bandwagon in January

“Content providers might be banning Google TV left, right, and center, but hardware partners don’t seem to be losing any enthusiasm. After Samsung openly admitted to contemplating a HDTV with Google TV hardware and software built right in, Toshiba and Vizio are now said to have firm plans to introduce such new products at January’s CES 2011.”
