AMD finally makes a tablet play

Advanced Micro Devices renewed its attempt to make an impact in the tablet market, this time with its new dual-core Z-60 chip which the company introduced on Tuesday.

When you look at this story you have to think: It’s too little too late. But maybe not. I have a lot of confidence in Rory Read the CEO of AMD. The former Lenovo COO has worldly qualities amount him and his IBM lineage gives him the ability to take on challenges that other, more siloed executives can’t begin to look at. Then comes the news that Apple might ditch Intel and there you have your opening.

Read also has very good Chinese market experience because he ran Lenovo and Apple’s manufacturing is in China.

I would not be surprised at all if Read, months ago, met with Tim Cook and outlined his options for a historic Apple/AMD partnership. Lets not forget the money angle here too. Read would have had to cut a great deal for Cook just to consider dropping Intel. And, Cook will soon be under pressure from shareholders to increase shareholder value. I can’t see how he does this with Intel, who will not cheapen its image or products buy offering Apple a cut rate deal.
